Rafael Nadal is one step away from his 19th Grand Slam title after beating Italy’s Matteo Brittini 7-6 6-4 6-1 to reach the US Open final on Friday.
If Nadal wins the title in New York, he will be only one more away from Roger Federer, the world record holder in men’s Grand Slam events with 20 titles.
Nadal put pressure on Brittini in his serve but missed six break opportunities before reaching the playoff break in the first set.
Brettini took a 4-0 lead in the tiebreak after unusual errors from Nadal and the 23-year-old had two chances to win the group as he advanced 6-4 in the tiebreak.
However, Brittini stumbled and Nadal took advantage of the situation and won the set after a long forehand from the Italian player and made 20 easy mistakes for Nadal to win.
Nadal broke Brittini in the 10th available opportunity to lead 4-3 in the second set and continue to win until the match.
Nadal will play in the final with brilliant Russian Daniel Medvedev, who has won three consecutive sets over Gregor Dimitrov. The pair met once in the Rogers Cup final in Montreal last month and Nadal outperformed 6-3, 6-0.
