On Sunday, Oct. 6, residents will be able to participate in a variety of active and fun family-friendly activities in a 3.5 mile stretch along Vernor Highway and Holly Street , including walking, biking, sports matches and more.
From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Oct. 6, Vernor Highway from Woodmere Street to Dix Avenue, and Holly Street from Dix Avenue to Lapeer Park will be closed to vehicles. Dix Avenue will remain open to vehicles. People will be able to walk or bike along the route, and there will be plenty of food samples along the way.
At Lapeer Park, people can participate in a variety of sports, including volleyball, soccer, and basketball. There will also be fitness activities for individuals with disabilities.
Along Holly Street, there will be kids’ crafts, an obstacle course, fitness activities for individuals of all abilities, street volleyball, giveaways from Healthy Dearborn, information tables from Healthy Dearborn, Dearborn Public Schools, and the League of Women Voters, and a First Aid Station courtesy of Beaumont Health.
Along Vernor Highway will be street volleyball, public transportation information from DDOT and SMART, free heart screenings courtesy of Beaumont Health, and more.
In addition, there will be 30-minute guided nature walks starting at 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m., and 1:30 p.m.
Registered dietician Lois Sczomak will be providing an informational “walk and talk” session, beginning at noon.
Bike Dearborn will also be present on Vernor Highway with a free helmet giveaway and safe city cycling at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. Supplies for the helmet giveaway are limited, so be sure to arrive early!
For those who want to bike throughout the area, there will be a Zagster Bike Share Station located on Vernor Highway and Riverside Drive, and one on Holly Street and Lapeer Street.
As Dix Avenue will remain open to vehicles during the event, there will be a police-assisted crossing between Holly Street and Vernor Highway. In addition, First Aid Stations will be provided courtesy of Beaumont, with one located on Holly Street near Lowrey Street, and another located on Vernor Highway near Westlawn Street.
Public parking for the event will be available at Lapeer Park, Salina School, Patton Memorial Center, and Patton Park, as well as on two lots located off Westlawn Street, near Vernor Highway.
