Dearborn Heights man denied cable account based on past due bill accrued by identity thief

A 62-year-old Dearborn Heights man learned that an identity thief had previously opened a cable account in his name, after Wide Open West denied him a new account based on a $340 past due bill.

The man, who filed a fraud report with Dearborn Heights Police Jan. 3, said he first applied Dec. 19 for the cable services. The provider directed him to file a police report, after which they would launch a fraud investigation. The victim will also receive, by mail, an identity theft packet from the police department.
