    Family fined by airline because their names were too long for its booking system – and didn’t match their passports after they bought their tickets

    A family was forced to pay extra to board their flight – because their names were too long. 
    The passengers had booked their flights with the Thai flag carrier – Thai Airways – on its website, but had been unable to fit their long names into the online booking form.
    This meant the father, who had made the booking, was forced to shorten their names – and that meant they no longer matched the ones in the passports.
    And when they turned up at the airport to board their flights, staff at the check-in counter noticed the names on their boarding passes didn’t match and said they would have to pay for name changes.
    The unnamed family were then forced to pay 3,000 Thai Baht (£69) in order to fly on the service.
    However, according to the Bangkok Post, the airline eventually reimbursed the family for the extra charges and said it will tweak its website so the problem doesn’t happen again.
    On its Facebook page, Thai Airways said: ‘We apologise for the inconvenience since the internet booking system allows up to 25 characters each for the first name and family name when booking a ticket.’
    Previously, Bob Atkinson, travel expert at TravelSupermarket, warned that airlines can be very strict when it comes to making sure the names on passports and boarding passes match. 
    He said: ‘Although your name will not stop you getting though security, it may stop you at check-in or boarding.
    ‘Your passport name should match your ticketed name on your boarding card.’
    However, it is not the first time Thai Airways have been in the news recently.
    Earlier this year it announced that obese passengers and parents travelling with children in business class will be booted back to economy class because the new seat belts won’t fit their waistlines.
    The international carrier banned kids and overweight people from flying business class after adding two new Dreamliner jets to its fleet in September last year.
    The airline said customers whose waistlines exceeded 142cm would not be able to fly the premium service because of the new seat belt airbags.
