Police in Kingston Springs, about 30 miles southwest of Nashville, said Janet Givens, 64, was standing outside her burning home when they first encountered her, local ABC affiliate WKRN reported. Because it was cold, they let her sit in one of their squad cars.
Cops said Givens then commandeered the vehicle, leading to a short chase, according to WKRN. That chase ended when Givens attempted to cross an icy highway overpass.
Givens and the SUV fell about 30 feet onto Interstate 40, WKRN reported. She suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was treated at a local hospital.
Authorities took her straight from the hospital to Cheatham County Jail and charged her with at least one count of theft, according to WKRN. Cops are still investigating the fire, which they said may have been set intentionally.
“I am not surprised by anything that happens over here anymore,” a neighbor told WKRN.
