The rise of machines isn’t just some plot in a James Cameron movie. Stephen Hawking says robots will replace humanity completely.
The physicist told WIRED magazine he believes artificial intelligence will eventually become so advanced it will essentially be a “new form of life that will outperform humans.”
He says, “I fear that AI may replace humans altogether. If people design computer viruses, someone will design AI that improves and replicates itself.”
If that doesn’t sound doom and gloom enough, the 75-year-old also predicts there will be “serious consequences” if people don’t start showing more of an interest in space to colonize other planets.
Hawking said, ”our earth is becoming too small for us. Global population is increasing at an alarming rate and we are in danger of self-destructing.”
Last year at Cambridge University, Hawking stated his belief that there’s not much of a difference between what a brain can do and what a computer can do, adding the advancements in self-driving cars are a sign of what is to come.
