Republican gubernatorial candidate James Craig believes that Governor Gretchen Whitmer, somehow, intervened to prevent state law enforcement from responding to the protesters who derailed his campaign ad on Tuesday morning in Belle Isle.
The former Detroit police chief indicted a major misconduct charge against the governor late Tuesday. The governor’s office responded quickly, saying the comments were minor.
Even before Craig’s television interview, state sources disputed his claims: the campaign originally planned the event before any permit was obtained. The text messages show that the campaign did not expect at least some state agencies to provide crowd control, even if others indicated that the state could ensure that protesters were not in the designated area for the ad.
