Couple who split up 60 years ago are getting married after unlikely reunion

An elderly couple who had an unlikely reunion six decades after they last saw each other are getting married. Ron Owen and Ruth Holt dated in the late 1950s but split up so Ron could pursue his budding career in showbusiness. They went their separate ways – but reunited when Ron happened to move into a bungalow across the road from Ruth in a housing complex in St Annes, Lancashire.
Now, Ron, 84, and his 79-year-old fiancee are planning a church wedding with 50 of their friends and family. And Ruth, who was married but has been single since her divorce in 1983, admitted that Ron was ‘always the one’
She said: ‘Over the years I have always thought about him and where he was, what he was doing. ‘I thought the world of him when we were together. He was always the one for me.’ Ruth realised her old flame had moved to her neighbourhood when her sister visited and told her a man was singing in the communal hall.
They quickly established it was ‘Ronnie Ray’ – Ron’s stage name – and with the help of staff at the housing complex, the pair met for the first time in 60 years. Ruth said: ‘He got to the bottom of the stairs up to the front of my bungalow but said he was struggling to get up them so I came down to see him.
We started talking straight away and it was like we had never been apart. We met up a few times for a chat and a drink and it went from there. ‘I couldn’t believe I had found him again.’ The couple were together when Ron was 23 and Ruth was 18, but parted ways after about a year
Ruth got married and moved to Saudi Arabia and India before returning to the UK, but Ron, who worked as a football scout and sang on cruise ships, never married. She added: ‘I had been on my own for more than 20 years and it is so nice to have someone.’
After meeting again in 2014, Ron popped the question in front of the TV this July. He said: ‘About six weeks ago we were watching telly and I just turned around to her and said ‘do you want to get married?’ ‘She nearly fell off the settee. I’m looking forward to it but I must admit I’m a little bit nervous.’
