The natural tendency to forget things becomes more prevalent as we age. When it comes to healthy aging, proactively taking care of your brain health is important whether you're 20 or 80 and diet significantly affects cognitive outcomes, according to Mind Your Body Green.
While polyphenol-rich fruits like berries are well known to have neuroprotective properties, a new study, published by Frontiers in Nutrition, reveals that polyphenol supplementation is also an effective way to reap the benefits of these phytonutrients for brain health.
The study involved 60 older men and women, ages 50 to 80. Participants were assessed at the beginning and end of the 12-week trial to see how cranberry supplementation affected their cognition, namely memory and executive function, brain function and biomarkers of neural signaling.
Participants who received cranberry supplements showed a significant improvement in visual episodic memory, the ability to remember the details of what something looked like, when compared to a control group. Episodic memory is also associated with remembering details of an event that occurred earlier in one's life, whether the day of the wedding or the first child. The findings suggest that cranberries, and more specifically polyphenols, play a large role in enhancing and maintaining memory later in life.
The researchers hypothesize that the improvement in memory may be a result of increased blood flow to the inner spinal cortex, which is the gateway for information entry and exit from the hippocampus, where learning and memory formation occur in the brain.
Lower bad cholesterol
In addition to the positive effects on memory, cranberry supplementation also significantly reduced LDL cholesterol. The health of the blood vessels is thus promoted and supported, further increasing the results of improved cognitive performance.
