10 killed in avalanche in the Indian Himalayas

At least 10 trained mountaineers were killed on Tuesday after an avalanche swept away in the Himalayas in northern India, the CBC website reported, noting that rescuers were searching for 11 others missing. Uttarakhand Police Chief Ashok Kumar said a group of 29 people had an avalanche on a mountain peak located in the Gangotri mountain range of Garhwal mountains in the Himalayas on Tuesday morning.

Kumar said all the missing were undergoing training at a mountaineering institute, but away from the avalanche site. Pushkar Singh Dami, chief elected official of Uttarakhand state, said the National Disaster Response Force and the Indian Army have deployed teams to assist in the rescue effort, and the Indian Air Force has also deployed two helicopters to search for the missing.
