A European aid package to Ukraine worth 18 billion euros

The European Parliament on Thursday approved an $18 billion aid package for Ukraine that the European Commission proposed earlier this month.

"The European Parliament has just approved, at record speed, an aid package of 18 billion euros for Ukraine to survive the war and begin its reconstruction," European Parliament President Roberta Metsola announced on Twitter.

And the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, had informed Vladimir Zelensky, on November 6, that she would discuss this week a plan to support Ukraine during 2023 at a value of 18 billion euros.

The European Commission statement, about the phone call between von der Leyen and Zelensky, said, “President von der Leyen informed Zelensky that this week she will propose a large EU financial package amounting to 1.5 billion euros per month, totaling 18 billion euros, which will contribute significantly to in covering Ukraine's financing needs for 2023".

The President of the European Commission and the President of Ukraine stressed the importance of ensuring regular funding for the country's basic needs, and the importance of support in the form of long-term loans on very concessional terms to support Ukraine's reforms and its path towards EU membership.

The statement pointed out that the grant to be proposed to the European Union should be matched by similar support from major donors to Ukraine.
