A farmer in Gaza discovers a mosaic dating back to the Byzantine era

A Palestinian farmer in Gaza by chance revealed a mosaic floor dating back to the Byzantine era, with the shapes of a group of colorful birds and other animals after he tried to plant new trees in his orchard.

Farmer Salman Al Nabaheen revealed this effect six months ago, while working in his olive grove in Al-Bureij refugee camp, about one kilometer from the border with Israel.

Al Nabaheen said that he tried to find out why some of the trees he planted did not take root in the soil as they should, adding that he and his son started digging to reveal the reason. During the digging, the son's ax hit a hard object of an unusual shape.

The Palestinian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities announced that the discovery includes a group of mosaic floors, animal icons and drawings that embody social life during the Byzantine era.

"The archaeological discovery is still in its infancy, and we are waiting to learn more secrets and cultural values," the ministry added in a statement.
