A video has gone viral showing a baby elephant guarding its dead mother after she ate crops containing toxic substances in Thailand.

The 11-month-old elephant escaped with its mother and landed in a farmland where they ate corn in the Tak area on April 22

However, the mother ate crops that contained large amounts of pesticides and chemicals, which led to her poisoning.

The villagers discovered the orphaned elephant on April 23, about 12 hours after his mother's death, refusing to leave her body. Some pictures also showed the baby elephant next to his deceased mother. An association concerned with elephants said that the baby elephant and another elephant found with them were taken to a center, where they will be examined if they also eat some poisonous corn.

Elephants are the national animals of Thailand. About 2,000 elephants live in forests, while a similar number live in captivity.

Laws protect elephants, as killing them leads to a prison sentence of up to 3 years and fines.
