Sunscreens are often used to protect against UV rays and to avoid sunstroke, but according to a recent study, these creams do not appear to be as effective and safe as we think.
This study, conducted by researchers from the University of Leeds in Britain and Oregon in the United States, and its results were published in the Journal of Photochemistry and Photobiological Sciences, revealed that chemical reactions involving zinc oxide, which is one of the components of sunscreen creams, weaken their effectiveness after two hours of use, and the worst is Creams that contain zinc oxide can be very dangerous to health.
According to the results of the study, zinc oxide eliminates the UV protection factor, which is provided by other components, after being exposed to the sun for two hours. The sun in this context can exacerbate the situation, because people believe that they are adequately protected from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays, and can stay for a long time in the sun.
During their experiments, the researchers studied how this mineral interacts with other components when exposed to sunlight, and also determined the amount of UV rays that sunscreen absorbs, to determine the protection factor of these rays in each mixture. The study pointed out that the researchers noticed that zinc oxide leads to the deterioration of other substances that absorb ultraviolet rays, which significantly reduces the protection provided by sunscreen creams, in just two hours, as the UV protection factor decreased by a range From 84.3% to 91.8% in creams mixed with zinc oxide, while creams that do not include this substance in their composition, the degree of loss of the UV protection factor reached 15.8%, after exposure to the sun for two hours.
The study proved that zinc oxide reduced the effectiveness of sunscreen, and also raised the degree of toxicity of the formula. Professor James Hutchison of the University of Oregon says that the problem is not the lack of effective protection from ultraviolet rays, but rather because the product itself causes damage during its use in the sun.
At the conclusion of the study, the researchers called for the creation of new formulations of sunscreen creams that take into account the possibility of photolysis of zinc oxide in the composition or during the reaction of the product on the skin.
