A special "robot" to treat blood clots... Here are the details

Scientists from the ITMO National Research University in Petersburg have devised a new method that allows to eliminate catheters and use shoring nets, which, due to their rigidity, threaten the patient's health.

And the university's media office indicates that scientists have created soft robots controlled by a magnetic field, which can be used to treat blood clots. This method allows to dispense with the use of catheters and shoring nets.

The statement read, "ITMO University scientists propose to treat blood clots with flexible robots controlled by magnetic field. This method is safer than its counterparts, and will in the future reduce intervention processes in the body and protect the inner walls of blood vessels from damage, which in turn reduces the formation of clots New".

“We plan to insert the robots into the blood vessel in the form of a soft tape, but under the influence of a rotating magnetic field it is transformed into a spiral” that “goes” to the site of the clot, says Anna Pozitkova, an engineer at the International Research Center SCAMT of ITMO. The "drill" wraps the clot and binds it. After it is tied, it returns with it under the influence of the magnetic field to the starting point, where the doctor removes it from the blood vessel."

According to her, the movement of the robots is programmed by the magnetic field, and thanks to its remote control, it does not harm the blood vessels when moving. The robot is 15mm long and 2mm wide, which allows it to move easily through deep veins, as well as reach hard-to-reach places. The robot has successfully passed all laboratory tests.
