"A tougher stance"... Washington punishes two Chinese companies over Iranian oil

On Thursday, the United States announced the imposition of sanctions on two Chinese companies for violating the embargo imposed on Iranian oil exports.

The US State Department said in a statement that the United States is targeting "Zhongguo" Storage and Transportation Co., Ltd., and "WS" Shipping Company.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Tai Zhongguo operated a commercial facility for storing Iranian crude oil, while WS transported Iranian petroleum products.

The New York Times said the move represented "a shift to a tougher stance toward Tehran amid signs that efforts to restore the 2015 Iran nuclear deal have failed."

The US Treasury also said eight entities based in Hong Kong, Iran, India and the United Arab Emirates were designated as violators of the sanctions.
