The French presidency reported that President Emmanuel Macron will travel to the capital, Abu Dhabi, today to offer condolences on the death of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed.
Today, Sunday, Macron announced his full support for Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, after his election as the new president of the United Arab Emirates.
Macron published a picture of him with the new president in a tweet on Twitter and wrote with her: "In Abu Dhabi to pay tribute to the memory of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, he was respected by all for the values of peace, openness and dialogue that he embodies."
He added, "My full support for his brother, who was elected president of the United Arab Emirates, as well as for the Emirati people."
Earlier on Saturday, the Federal Supreme Council announced the unanimous election of Mohammed bin Zayed as President of the United Arab Emirates.
The Emirates News Agency reported that the council held a meeting today at Al Mushrif Palace in Abu Dhabi, headed by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
After the meeting, the Ministry of Presidential Affairs issued a statement saying that "according to Article 51 of the constitution, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan was unanimously elected President of the United Arab Emirates to succeed the late Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan." For his part, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan "expressed his appreciation for the precious trust placed in him by the members of the Supreme Council of the Union of Rulers of the Emirates, praying to the Almighty to guide him and help him to assume the responsibility of this great trust and fulfill its right to serve his country and the people of the Emirates."
