Aoun and Mikati agree on an urgent step to confront Israel in the issue of offshore gas extraction

Lebanese President Michel Aoun discussed with Prime Minister Najib Mikati, this morning, the steps to be taken to confront Israel's attempts to "stress the situation on the southern maritime borders."

In this regard, the media office of the caretaker government in Lebanon, Najib Mikati, issued a statement in which he said: "Within the framework of following up the developments of the maritime movements carried out by the ship of the liquefied natural gas production unit "Energean power" off the disputed maritime area in southern Lebanon, President of the Republic, General Michel Aoun, discussed with Prime Minister Najib Mikati this morning the steps to be taken to confront the attempts of the Israeli enemy to strain the situation on the southern maritime borders.

The statement added: "His Excellency the President and the State of the President have agreed to invite the American mediator, Amos Hochstein, to come to Beirut to discuss the issue of completing the negotiations to demarcate the southern maritime borders and work to end them as soon as possible, in order to prevent any escalation that will not serve the state of stability in the region." ".

The statement continued: "It was also decided to conduct a series of diplomatic contacts with major countries and the United Nations to explain Lebanon's position, to affirm Lebanon's adherence to its rights and marine wealth, and to consider that any exploration, prospecting, or extraction work carried out by Israel in the disputed areas constitutes a provocation and an act of aggression that threatens peace and security." It obstructs the negotiations on the maritime borders, which are mediated by the United States and under the auspices of the United Nations, according to what was stated in the officially registered Lebanese correspondence to the United Nations.
