The omicron-fueled surge that is skyrocketing in cases of COVID-19 in the US is putting children in hospital in near record numbers, and experts lament that most children have not been vaccinated.
“It’s very heartbreaking,” said Dr. Paul Offit, an infectious disease expert at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. “It was hard enough last year, but now you know you have a way to prevent all of this.”
During the week of December 21-27, an average of 334 children age 17 or younger were hospitalized daily with coronavirus, a 58% increase from the previous week, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The previous peak over the course of the pandemic was in early September, when the number of hospitalized children averaged 342 per day, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.
