Cuba Zoo celebrates the birth of a rare white rhino baby

Cuba's National Zoo celebrates the birth of a rare white rhino baby earlier this month in the outskirts of the capital, Havana.

The white rhino is an endangered species and zoos around the world have been asked to breed them in captivity in the hope of creating a gene bank that would help conserve the species if it goes extinct in the wild.

“It is a great honor for us to be able to contribute to saving endangered species such as the white rhino,” said Alexandre Arango, a wildlife specialist at the Cuban zoo.

Arango says Cuba now has the second largest white rhino population in Latin America, with eight in all.

White rhinos, among the largest land mammals, have suffered in recent years as poaching has increased in their habitat, primarily across southern Africa. Zoo officials said this has increased pressure on zoos to conserve the species.
