German Minister: No more naivety in dealing with China

German Economy Minister Robert Habeck said the government is working on a new trade policy toward China to reduce dependence on Chinese raw materials, batteries and semiconductors, vowing there would be "no more naivety" in business dealings with Beijing.

Sources told Reuters last week that the Economy Ministry is studying a set of new measures to make business with China less attractive. This is the first time that the minister has made it clear that a tougher approach is being translated into political action.

Minister Robert Habeck said China was a welcome trading partner, but Germany could not allow Beijing's protectionist trade policy to distort competition and would not back down from criticizing human rights abuses for fear of losing business.

"We cannot allow ourselves to be blackmailed," he added in an interview.
