"Greenpeace" urges the Arab League to avoid an environmental disaster in Yemen

Greenpeace urged the Arab League to hold an emergency meeting of foreign ministers of member states in order to fund the United Nations plan to rescue the oil tanker "Safer" in Yemen.

It also called for a solution to the humanitarian and environmental threats posed by this oil tanker to Yemen and neighboring countries, as well as to the fragile environment in the region.

In May 2022, a conference organized by the United Nations to mobilize donations was able to collect about half of the desired amount, which is $80 million, to finance the first phase of the plan, which aims to transfer oil from the rusted ship to another oil tanker as a temporary measure.

Safer is a 45-year-old oil tanker carrying 1.1 million barrels of oil (more than 140,000 tons). Conducted by laboratories of the "Greenpeace" research organization.
