Hurricane Ian death toll continues to climb, 47 dead in Florida

Hurricane Ian is being blamed for near four-dozen deaths in Florida alone as bodies are recovered from storm-ravaged areas stretching from Cuba to North Carolina.

The storm left at least 47 people dead in Florida, where it made landfall last week as a Category 4 hurricane. More than 850,000 Floridians awoke with no electrical power Sunday. Ian also left four people dead in North Carolina and took three lives in Cuba.

Rescue workers in Florida, including the volunteer group Medic Corps, found residents of Pine Island devastated after powerful winds and gushing water destroyed the bridge connecting the barrier island to the mainland. Survivors there described to the Associated Press a life-threatening predicament where boats, homes and debris gave way to rushing flood waters.
