Hurricane Ian wipes out large section of Sanibel Causeway in Florida, cutting off only access to island of 6,300 people

A large section of a bridge connecting Sanibel Island with the Florida mainland collapsed into the Gulf of Mexico early Thursday morning, essentially cutting off access to the barrier island of about 6,300 people.

Just after 4 a.m. on Thursday, one of the sections of the Sanibel Causeway “disappeared,” wiped away by the then-Category 4 storm, according to the Tampa Bay Times.

“Where the bridge rises from the mainland toward the island, one of the first sections of the span has disappeared. Crumbled pavement lies near the water’s edge,” wrote a reporter for the newspaper, who was in the area hoping to assess the damage from the hurricane.
