India: 9 arrested over suspension bridge collapse, dozens killed

Indian police have arrested 9 people suspected of being involved in the collapse of the suspension bridge in Morbi, Gujarat, on Monday.

In a statement, the inspector general of Rajkot district, Ashok Kumar Yadav, said, "The nine people, all associated with a company that was performing maintenance work on the recently completed renovation, are under investigation for manslaughter."

It is reported that nearly 137 people were killed as a result of the collapse of the Morbi suspension bridge, yesterday, Sunday, in the state of Gujarat, western India.

The authorities said that about 500 people, including women and children, were performing rituals for a major religious festival over the bridge that crosses a river, when the wires supporting it broke, causing the entire structure to collapse into the river, shortly after evening.
