Lebanese billionaire Lily Safra dies at the age of 87
Billionaire Lily Safra, the widow of the late Lebanese banker Edmond Safra, died Saturday at the age of 87.

"For more than twenty years, Safra has faithfully supported the legacy of giving to her beloved husband Edmond, providing support to hundreds of charities around the world," the Edmond Safra Foundation statement read.

A Saturday night funeral will be held in Geneva, Switzerland.

Born in Porto Alegre, Brazil, Lily Safra spent part of her life in Monaco and in Geneva, where she passed away. Lily Safra married the Lebanese banker Edmond Safra in 1976, and inherited his fortune following his death in a criminal fire set by one of his nurses inside his apartment in Monaco in 1999, in a case that caused a sensation, according to AFP.

Lily Safra was known for her generous donations, and she especially supported research to treat people with Parkinson's and other brain diseases.

She also donated 10 million euros to the Heritage Foundation in France, in the aftermath of the fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris in 2019.
