Mayor Hammoud  announced transformative new initiative around literacy and education.

Mayor Hammoud said on his Facebook page :

Four years ago, while pumping gas at the station on Warren and Schaefer (b/c where else would I pump?), I was on the phone with then State Senator David Knezek. I was asking for advice on how to create a generational impact. As we got to talking, the idea of creating an endowment fund to support a meaningful citywide initiative took hold.
The next day, I called Amad Elzayed with the Amity Foundation and asked if he’d be willing to embark on this journey with me and without hesitation, he agreed. We dreamt of creating a fund that would provide families access to the Dolly Parton Imagination Library and increased support for special education programming in our city.
Four years and $2.8M dollars later, we were finally able to share this exciting news! It wasn’t easy, but the goals of this endeavor – increased literacy rates, higher lifetime earnings, greater quality of life – was worth every effort. A BIG thank you to all the partners who made today possible.
Free book for every child (ages 0-5yrs), every month, delivered to your home - 60 books in total. This is all at no cost to families and no cost to the taxpayers.
Let it be known that in Dearborn, we invest in our children from the day they are born. That is but one part of the Dearborn Advantage.
