New technology raises hopes of recovery from a serious lung disease

In a new discovery that raises hopes that a treatment for deadly bacterial pneumonia can be developed, scientists have managed to direct a swarm of microscopic robots to get rid of the infection-causing microbes in the lungs of mice.

"Based on these mice data, we see that microbots can improve antibiotic penetration to kill bacterial pathogens and save more patients' lives," says Victor Nesette, MD, professor of pediatrics at the University of California, San Diego. And the robots were able to deliver the treatment to the targeted places in the lung more accurately, and more effectively than injection therapy.

The researchers are confident, according to “Nature Materials”, that the new method can be expanded as required, and it will be easy to direct it to the patient’s lungs, through a tube in the trachea.

Researchers aim to deliver targeted drugs to more difficult parts of the body in a safe, easy, biocompatible and long-lasting manner.
