Nicaragua expels the ambassador of the European Union from the country

A diplomatic source said that Nicaragua's Foreign Minister, Denis Moncada, informed, on Wednesday, the European Union ambassador in Managua, Bettina Mochait, that his government had decided to expel her from the country.

"Mouchet, who took office in Managua in October 2021, was summoned to the headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where Minister Moncada recited to her the decision to expel her from his country," the source said.

According to the Nicaraguan "100% Notícias" website, the government attributed its decision to expel Ambassador Mouchet to "the European Union's interference in Nicaragua's affairs and its lack of respect for national sovereignty."

However, the diplomatic source confirmed to Agence France-Presse that no official decision had been announced so far, and that the Nicaraguan government had not issued, until Wednesday afternoon, any comment regarding these news.

The expulsion of the EU ambassador comes seven months after Managua expelled Papal Ambassador Valdemar Sommertag.
