As residents and members visit the HYPE Athletics Center in Wayne, they will now notice the community centers new name, A tribute and recognition to former Mayor Abdul “AL” Haidous’s 40 + years of work and dedication to the city of Wayne.

 

HYPE Athletics reopened the doors to the former Wayne Community in August of 2015 after the City Council voted to close the center due to budget restraints.   Adding much needed services and programs in addition to reopening the aquatic center and adding 3 new basketball courts brought life to the community and the center.   The 130,000 sq ft center is home to a state-of-the-art fitness center, basketball courts, an indoor track, gymnastics center, martial arts center, and new renovated White Rose Banquet Center.

 

Commissioner Abdul “Al” Haidous made his move to the City of Wayne where he opened Al’s market at the corner of Howe rd. and Annapolis. In 1974, he joined several community activist to construct a new community.   With support from residents and city officials, the Wayne Community Center was built.  Home to racquet ball courts, weight rooms, banquet facilities the Wayne Community Center became home to many residents.  Al continued his journey to work with leaders to expand the center, which later included an ice rink and aquatics center.   Al served on the City Council and was elected Mayor in 2001 and served until 2014, furthermore, he is currently elected to serve as the Wayne County Commissioner.

 

The celebration was accompanied by family, friends, and elected officials that represent the communities he serves and the relationships forged.   Guest speakers honored Al with words of love and appreciation.  Professor Tallal Turfe, Crestwood School Board Member Hassan Beydoun, Minister Troy Mohammad, and CEO of Wayne County Warren Evans.


It is an honor to recognize the achievements and successes Al Haidous. He’s the gem of the community, naming the center after him just made perfect sense.  He’s deserving of this and more, Ali Sayed, CEO HYPE Athletics.
