Preliminary results: 98% of voters in the referendum voted in favor of joining Russia

About 98% of voters in the republics of Lugansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions voted in favor of joining Russia, Russian media reported, according to preliminary data after counting about 27 percent of the votes.

The head of the Kherson Provincial Election Commission, Marina Zakharova, announced that after counting 11.62 of the votes of participants in the referendum for the province's accession to Russia, the percentage of those voting in favor of joining Russia reached 87.43 percent, while the percentage of opponents was 11.34 percent.

The Council of the Russian Federation announced that "it may consider, at the next meeting, scheduled for October 4, the annexation of the republics of Lugansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions to Russia, if the result of the referendums is positive."

"We will respect the will of the residents of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions. If there is such a will on their part, we will of course support it," said Valentina Matvienko, Speaker of the Russian Federation Council.

"At the moment, I don't see the need for any unscheduled meetings. I think we are ready to look into this issue on October 4," she added.
