Selling a rare car at a record price... how much?

German car maker Mercedes-Benz said on Thursday it had sold an extremely rare car from the company's collection at auction for 135 million euros ($143 million).

The company explained that the price paid by a private collector earlier this month for the 300 SLR Ulinhaut Coupe, with its distinctive winged doors, makes it the most valuable car ever.

This claim cannot be independently verified, according to the Associated Press.

Mercedes-Benz said the proceeds will be used to launch a fund that provides scholarships for young people to learn about and research environmental sciences and decarbonization. Carbon dioxide, which comes from burning fossil fuels, is largely blamed for climate change.

The car was one of two prototypes built in 1955, and named after the company's chief engineer, Rudolf Ullenhout.

“We would like to encourage a new generation to follow in the innovative footsteps of Rudolf Ullenhout and develop amazing new technologies, especially those that support the critical goal of decarbonization and resource conservation,” said Ola Kalinos, CEO of Mercedes-Benz Group.

The company revealed that its holdings include about 1,100 cars dating back to 1886.
