The body needs to drink 8-10 glasses of water during the winter

Water is a very important component of the human body. Our body is made up of 70% water and requires hydration for all vital elements to function well. The body uses water in all its cells, organs, and tissues to regulate and maintain all bodily functions.

In the summer months, the body loses a lot of water in sweat, digestion and urination and thus its replenishment is very important. Health experts recommend drinking 8-10 glasses of water every day to prevent dehydration.

What happens when the body becomes dehydrated?

Dehydration is the main cause of tiredness, fatigue and many chronic diseases, apart from risking diseases, it also leads to loss of strength and stamina and can be life threatening. According to the NHS, dehydration occurs when your body loses more fluids than you take in. When your body's natural water content drops, it upsets the balance of minerals such as sugar and salts in your body, affecting the way it functions.


Some early warning signs of dehydration include:

Feeling very thirsty

Dryness in the mouth

Extreme fatigue

Dark colored urine with a strong smell

Urinating less often than usual


What happens in winter?

As the cooler months approach, we sweat less and the air around us becomes drier, our bodies receive less moisture from the atmosphere and fluid consumption decreases compared to summer.

Since we are not as thirsty in the winter, health experts say the tendency to become dehydrated is much more.


How much water should you drink in the winter?

Experts believe that it is not necessary to drink several glasses of water, as you can't fill yourself up and end up feeling sick. Take small sips throughout the day to make sure your body is sufficiently hydrated. Also, the body can be hydrated by various other means such as beverages such as hot tea and soups which also provide adequate nourishment to the body. Experts say at least four cups of green tea or two bowls of soup are good hydrating agents.


Some important tips for staying hydrated throughout the day include:

Drink bowls full of seasonal vegetables and meat soups to stay hydrated in winters. Soups contain plenty of water along with proteins and vitamins and can therefore help you stay hydrated. Add vegetables such as spinach, carrots and beans to the mix to boost nutrition. Start your day with warm water infused with honey and lemon each day. It helps in hydration as well as useful in keeping the immune system boosted and regulated. Both honey and lemon help the body fight off the flu and other infections.

Drink green tea in a variety of flavors that provide hydration as well as antioxidants that keep free radicals at bay.

Include water-containing fruits and vegetables in your diet which are natural sources of water. They will help you stay hydrated and healthy.
