United Nations: Syria is witnessing a rapid outbreak of a cholera epidemic

Some UN officials stated that Syria is witnessing the "worst economic crisis since the outbreak of the war", "severe violence", and "a rapidly spreading cholera epidemic".


The spread of the epidemic has led to the emergence of more than 24,000 suspected cases, and the death of at least 80 people.

For his part, the UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen told the UN Security Council on Tuesday that the conflict in Syria remains "very active" across the country despite the "strategic stalemate" that has hampered efforts to launch a political process between the two countries. The government and the opposition, referring to the infighting between armed opposition factions in the city of Afrin in the Aleppo governorate, in the north of the country, the government’s air strikes in the northwest of the country, the violence in the northeast of the country, security incidents in southwest Syria, and the air raids attributed to Israel on the airports in Damascus and Aleppo And the discovery of one of the largest caches of weapons belonging to the Islamic State since the fall of the so-called “caliphate” in 2017, in the northeast of the country.
