video: Hundreds dead in earthquake in Kitika province, southeastern Afghanistan

Maulvi Sharafuddin Muslim, Deputy Minister of State for Disaster Management of Afghanistan, said that "280 people were killed and 610 others injured" in the earthquake that hit parts of the country last night, according to Tolo News network.


The 5.9-magnitude quake struck at a depth of 10 km around 1.30 a.m. near the border with Pakistan, while a second 4.5-magnitude quake struck around the same place at the same time, according to the US Seismological Institute.


A government official confirmed that "many houses were damaged and people are trapped inside."


The Kayan district police chief of the province said the quake occurred at midnight last night.
