You'd better shut up.. Brazil's president reacts emotionally to DiCaprio

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro quickly responded with "irritability" to the American movie star, Leonardo DiCaprio, after the latter talked about the need to preserve the Amazon rainforest in light of the repercussions of climate change.

According to CNN, Bolsonaro said in a speech to his supporters in front of the Alvorada presidential palace that it would be better to "shut up DiCaprio."

Environmental activists accuse the right-wing Brazilian president of indifference to climate matters, saying the situation in the Amazon rainforest is getting worse since he came to power.

Bolsonaro responded by saying that DiCaprio should know that the head of the World Trade Organization himself asserts and acknowledges that the world would starve if it were not for Brazilian farming. "It's better for him to shut up than to say this nonsense," he added.

Experts say that agriculture in the Amazon is the second cause of damage to those forests, because it leads to soil erosion and sedimentation in rivers, in addition to the use of harmful chemical fertilizers.

The response from the Brazilian president came after a series of tweets from the American star in which he called on young Brazilians to register to vote in the October elections.

"What happens there is important to all of us," DiCaprio wrote. He stressed that the role of young people is pivotal in the march towards a "healthy planet", as he put it, then encouraged young people to register, referring to the need for them to vote for candidates who champion the environment and the protection of the Amazon.
